In October, naturopathic cardiologist Dr Decker Weiss undertook a series of retailer lectures in the UK and Ireland hosted by Viridian Nutrition as part of its ongoing education programme.
A pioneer in the application of lifestyle medicine, in particular, using nutrition to treat and reverse heart disease, Dr Weiss discussed essential nutrients and lifestyle factors for a healthy heart, systemic inflammation and homocysteine effects on health, as well as side effects of common heart medications and ways to overcome them.
Weiss told NPN that through the lectures he hoped retailers would learn how to treat each person who comes through the door on an individual basis without being overwhelmed. “I was thrilled to meet so many health food store owners and staff on this Viridian-sponsored Cardiovascular Education Tour. Our aim was to replace worry with knowledge. There is so much data now on lifestyle medicine and food supplements and their role in heart health, it was my honour to share that information.
“We have to remember that while health food stores do not do what doctors do, conversely doctors simply do not do what the health food store does. In my opinion, health food stores are the new primary care centres – giving advice on lifestyle, exercise and nutrition to help people enjoy a healthy old age.”

Aimeé Benbow, technical director at Viridian Nutrition said: “Our ambition with this lecture tour was to demystify a seemingly complicated and confusing health category and enhance levels of confidence in discussing cardiovascular health in store.”
The five-venue tour saw over 500 health store managers and staff attend the lectures. “Dr Decker’s presentation was absolutely brilliant. He didn’t baffle me with science,” commented attendee Hannah Bourne, manager at Naturallife in Bridport. “It made perfect sense which I can hopefully pass on.”
