US industry journal Nutrition Business Journal has published a special edition that catalogues the bad practices and rogue operators responsible for a string of scandals that have hit the American natural products industry in recent years.

NBJ’s Dark Issue sets out to “name names … and provide analysis on some of the year’s most scandalous and provocative issues in the field of organics and supplements”.

Explaining the thinking behind the special double issue, NBJ editor Rick Polito says: “We decided to do a Dark Issue because the industry needs to take a close look at the darker side of the supplement business. With or without more stringent regulation from the FDA and the FTC, the nutrition industry lives and dies by its reputation and its credibility. These stories serve as opportunities for all of us to learn and improve.”

“The truth is, the vast majority of nutrition and wellness companies are run by honest operators delivering a solid product,” Polito added. “The Dark Issue will start a conversation about how to create a framework that could keep the less responsible players in check.”
