Giant ethical retailer, Whole Foods Market, celebrated the expansion of its ethical sourcing programme in Costa Rica last month with the in-store promotion of Whole Trade pineapples. Working with Costa Rican growers, Whole Foods Market selects pineapples that carry the Whole Trade Guarantee seal, which ensures farmers receive a fair wage, safe working conditions, and care for the environment. One per cent of Whole Trade purchases is also donated to the Whole Planet Foundation to help fight poverty in developing countries.
“We’re thrilled to offer a delicious fruit that not only raises the bar on quality and taste, but also gives shoppers an opportunity to make a real difference for the environment,” says Karen Christensen, global produce coordinator for Whole Foods Market. “By purchasing Whole Trade products, shoppers can support socially and environmentally responsible farming practices in developing countries.”
