Tesco: The Big Price Rise before the Big Price Drop

Investigations by The Times and The Grocer show that Tesco abruptly increased the price of “dozens” of items featured in its £500m Big Price Drop campaign just before they became ‘bargains’.

Tesco promised savings of up to 35% on some 3,000 items. However, The Times has revealed some are more expensive after the start of the promotion than they were in August and early September.

The Grocer reported last week that its random weekly sample of 30 items had become 34p more expensive at Tesco since the start of the Big Price Drop promotion.

Tesco has denied it is manipulating prices and told The Times that it was “inevitable” that some products in the promotion had been part of “Previous discount offers”.
