The popularity of shopping coupons is soaring, reports The Grocer magazine this week. In fact, a record 61% of consumers are claiming to use the money saving device, with wealthier AB consumers being among the highest users.

However, these well-heeled types will have been less than impressed with a recent Sainsbury’s ‘offer’. Apparently shoppers who used its coupon-at-till system were greeted with a printed out voucher announcing ‘Enjoy 1p to spend on your next shop’.

Needless to say shoppers expressed their feelings on the matter in a thoroughly contemporary way — yes, they posted sarky comments on Facebook. “Thank you for your generosity,” said one. “I’ll try not to spend it all at once,” said another.

And the overall reaction? 1peed off probably sums it up.
