US natural and organic industry grows 7% to hit $81 billion

Sales of natural and organic products in the US hit $81 billion, reports Natural Foods Merchandiser magazine.

The magazine says the headline results of its 2010 Market Overview “show that consumers are spending again and that the natural and organic industry is healthy and growing”.

Natural products retailers grabbed $36 billion of sales (44% of the total market at retail value), recording growth of 7%. Conventional retailers grew their sales of natural and organic products by 7.6% to reach $29.19 (a 36% market share. Practitioners meanwhile took 4% of total sales, and e-retailers and mail order firms grabbed 3% each. Other non-retail channels accounted for 9%.
