The controversial environmental activist Mark Lynas has claimed that opposing biotechnology is “ideological”.

Writing in The Times Lynas said: “No amount of scientific evidence can shake (GM opponents) near-religious conviction that anything GM must be intrinsically evil. Opposing GM is, for many protestors, another front in their war against big corporations.

Commenting on Take Back The Flour‘s case against the GM wheat trial being at Rothhamsted Research, Lymas added: “The researchers have pledged that their GM wheat will be patent-free. Those who worry that GM technology is dominated by big corporations should surely be supporting this public sector research, not trying to vandalise it.

Mark Lynas is a contributor to The Ecologist and New Statesman and a “former GM crop vandal”.
