The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has told nutraingredients.com that it is currently investigating nine companies over possible breaches of new herbal laws.

The MHRA has confirmed to the online food industry daily that it is aware of companies re-labelling as ‘food supplements’ herbal products sold pre-THMPD with medicinal product registration exemptions.

The MHRA has being coming under growing pressure from companies with THR licences to enforce the new herbal regime more robustly. The issue is set to come into the spotlight early in 2012 when the Campaign for Safer Herbal Medicine — an initiative backed by the British Herbal Medicines Association and Schwabe — is launched formally.
