The fashion designer and campaigner Katherine Hamnett has used the publicity surrounding her recently received CBE to urge cotton growers around world go organic.

She received the award from the Queen in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on June 1.

Speaking after receiving the award, Hamnett said: “Consumers want organic cotton but the industry is taking a long while to catch up with demand.

“More important than the fashion is the ethical side of the business. It’s good to get something like this but I do feel like I’ve been a bit of an Old Testament prophet preaching in the wilderness.”

• Katherine Hamnett presented the award for Best New Organic Textile Product (to Organic For Kids) at this year’s Natural & Organic Awards at Olympia.
