Action on Sugar has criticized the discounter Aldi after high-sugar energy drinks were spotted in its new ‘health lanes, reports The Grocer.

The retailer hit the headlines in December when it announced that it was banning sweets and chocolates from its checkouts. But its promise to replace them with healthy dried fruit, nuts and juices has ben called into question after sugar campaigners discovered it stocking its own-label energy drink Red Thunder –  which packs 26g of sugar into each can – alongside those nuts and seeds.

Action of Sugar told the food industry weekly that Aldi’s stocking policy “a classic failing of the voluntary nature of the Responsibility Deal”. However, Aldi insisted that it was “an isolated incident”.
