Dana Burton, owner of independent ethical retailer Goodfayre, which opened last year in Salisbury, has launched the #ethicalchallenge.
The initiative aims to encourage customers to change one habit each month to lead a more ethical life. Participants are asked to set themselves, a goal – for example to go vegan, only buy local – and then change one habit each month to achieve it.
An Ethical Challenge planner is available instore or to download from the shop’s website where there is also an ideas page on habits you could change each month. Those taking part can use the hashtag #ethicalchallenge to tell others about their challenge, and there is also a Facebook group and blog.
Explaining how the idea came about, Burton says: “It is aimed at people who are ready to start exploring an ethical life but may be a bit scared about it. If you think I want to go vegan or vegetarian or cut plastic out of my life, it can be quite a daunting thought, so with the challenge you can do it over a 12 month period and change one habit a month. For example I started by changing my toiletries, then my household products; by doing it gradually I was able to get there a lot easier. Sometimes people think there’s a lot of stigma around leading these ethical lives and that you either do or you don’t, but actually every step you take is beneficial.”
