Recent national newspaper articles proclaiming the health benefits of xylitol have produced a sharp hike in the sales of xylitol containing products, reports The Grocer.

The Daily Mail and The Times have both reported on the natural sweetener’s role in helping fight tooth decay. Natural mint and gum brand Peppersmith reported a “phenomenal reaction” following the coverage. Its online sales were up 2000% and some bricks and mortar retailers were selling out of product said co-founder Dan Shrimpton.

Holland & Barrett meanwhile saw sales of xylitol products rise by up to 350% over the same period last year, said the grocery industry weekly.
