Reconomy, a leading international circular economy specialist, has launched a new campaign to spotlight the urgent need for businesses to transition away from linear economic models and embrace more sustainable, circular practices.

The campaign, titled Close the Gap, responds to alarming data that shows just 7.2% of resources are currently fed back into the global economy – leaving a staggering circularity gap of 92.8%. This shortfall is exacerbating environmental challenges, with resource extraction and processing accounting for around half of global greenhouse gas emissions and more than 90% of biodiversity loss and water stress.

Despite increased sustainability efforts in recent years, the world’s dependence on virgin materials has continued to rise. Since 1970, global material extraction has tripled, now surpassing 100 billion tonnes annually. During the same period, the global Circularity Metric has dropped from 9.1% to 7.2% in just six years.

Reconomy’s new initiative aims to make circular practices more accessible and actionable for businesses. By encouraging companies to keep materials in use for longer and implement small operational or design changes, the campaign highlights opportunities to reduce emissions, cut costs, and improve efficiency.

Diane Crowe, Head of Sustainability at Reconomy, commented: “We are pleased to launch this campaign to shine a light on one of the biggest challenges of our time. Society is consuming resources faster than the world can regenerate them and the exponential growth in material extraction is driving unsustainable levels of greenhouse gas emissions.

“Through this campaign, we want to show that embracing the circular economy is easier than many businesses realise. By better managing resources, businesses can lower their environmental impact while boosting profits, cash flows and long-term resilience. This is all the more critical in light of the current volatile global economic backdrop, where businesses are under growing pressure to cut costs and operate more efficiently.”

Running over the coming weeks, the Close the Gap campaign will feature a range of educational content tailored to key sectors, real-world success stories from Reconomy customers, and digital resources including a launch video and dedicated campaign webpage.
