Without fail, the cooler months bring with them an influx of people seeking winter remedies to ward off the seasonal sniffles that become rampant this time of year – our unique climate makes sure of that. But with doctors warning of a ‘tripledemic’ this winter – a trio of COVID, flu and RSV – it’s more important than ever to protect ourselves from the nasty winter viruses doing the rounds.
Immunity through winter is now top of the mind for many, with a recent study from Optibac Probiotics revealing that more than a quarter of UK adults say avoiding coughs, colds and flu is their top health concern right now. The poll of 2,000 UK adults also found that 72% of the nation were keen to improve their immune system so they can live their life to the fullest (60%), maintain good health for the family (44%) and simply because they have had enough of catching colds (26%).
The study also found that 15% of those surveyed plan to spend more on avoiding cold and flu bugs this year, showing a growing awareness around natural ways to fortify the immune system, despite financial constraints like the cost-of-living crisis. Some consumers have been ‘trading down’ to lower cost, own-label remedies but these often come with problems of their own. Emulsifiers and sweeteners added to lower-quality supplements can disrupt the gut microbiome, where 70% of our immune system resides. This can weaken immunity, increase susceptibility to illness, and create a vicious cycle where additives undermine the very benefits these supplements are meant to provide.
Vitamin variety
One of the core nutrients to prioritise for winter health is Vitamin D. It plays a crucial role in supporting the immune system, which faces extra challenges during the colder months. Often referred to as the ‘sunshine vitamin,’ vitamin D is synthesised by the skin in response to sunlight. However, winter brings shorter days and weaker sunlight, meaning that many people -particularly those in northern climates – don’t produce enough of the vitamin naturally, leaving the immune system more vulnerable to seasonal infections.
“Vitamin D enhances our innate immune system whose role it is to protect us against infection, vital when the immune system is subject to the numerous viral infections circulating during winter months.” explains Corin Sadler BSc, DipION, FDSc, Medical Herbalist and Senior Nutritionist at Viridian Nutrition. “It also helps keep the adaptive arm of the immune system in check, the part responsible for antibody production and immune memory, to help prevent over-activity which could lead to auto-immune disease.”
Factors such as weight, age, and skin pigmentation can affect the amount of vitamin D needed, with many people requiring more than the government recommendation of 400iu. To meet the needs of those requiring a higher supplementation, Viridian Nutrition has released a high-strength Vitamin D3 4000IU, derived from lichen – a vegan alternative to the lanolin commonly found in many vitamin D3 supplements.
“In terms of effectively raising serum vitamin D levels, we know that the D3 form is more efficient than D2 at raising levels,” Corin continues. “Viridian have been involved with the University of Surrey in a vitamin D3 study in women which found that supplementation of 600iu for 12 weeks prevented deficiency over the winter months even in those deficient at the start of the study and regardless of sun exposure in their relative locations. Whilst this low dose was effective, the study leaders suggested increasing the dose upwards of 600iu could help raise levels more optimally through the winter, highlighting the need for higher dose products to be available to achieve this.”
Regarding lifestyle changes to complement supplements for better winter immunity, Corin recommends a diet rich in fruit and vegetables for vitamin C, along with nuts, seeds, seafood and wholegrains as sources of zinc and omega 3 fats, all of which are important for immune function.
“Vitamin C works via various mechanisms including supporting the vital lining of the respiratory tract. Some research suggests a protective effect against the common cold, an effect more marked in those in under stress.
“Like vitamin C, zinc is also synonymous with immune health and research demonstrates that deficiency increases susceptibility to infections and immune dysfunction. Often part of a multivitamin and mineral, extra might be needed.
“The herb elecampane is an often-overlooked remedy for the colder months. Its roots have a warming quality and is supportive to soothing tickly throats and enables easy respiration.
“Not forgetting the role of the gut microbiome in immune health, we are advocates of live bacteria supplementation to support defences both locally in the gut and systemically.”
Immunity with Iron
Despite being a vital nutrient that plays a major role in overall health, over 3.7 million UK adults have low iron levels. The essential mineral provides many health benefits and is an important factor in supporting immunity, combating seasonal fatigue and maintaining cognitive function.
“Iron is vital for the proper functioning of immune cells, especially lymphocytes (white blood cells), which are essential for fighting infections,” says Cara Shaw, Nutritionist and Spokesperson for BlueIron. “It helps in the production and proliferation of these cells, allowing the immune system to mount an effective response. This is particularly important as the season shifts into colder months and people are more likely to contract infections such as colds, flu, and respiratory viruses. The immune system needs to be in optimal condition to fight off these pathogens, and iron plays a key role in ensuring that immune cells function properly.”
“Iron deficiency symptoms can often be overlooked, particularly during winter months when people might attribute certain symptoms to the seasonal changes,” Cara adds, listing common signs of iron deficiency which may be ignored: feeling fatigued or weak even with sufficient rest, frequent infections, hair loss, brittle nails and paleness, especially in the face, gums, or inside of the lower eyelids.
At its core, iron is essential for the immune system’s functionality. Long term iron deficiency can have detrimental effects on immune function, as without sufficient iron, the body’s ability to produce and activate immune cells is compromised leading to a higher susceptibility for infections and illness.
“B cells require iron to produce antibodies, which are critical for fighting infections and creating immune memory. Chronic iron deficiency can impair the body’s ability to mount an effective immune response to pathogens, making the individual more vulnerable to recurrent infections.
“Iron is important for maintaining the integrity of mucosal membranes, which protect the body from pathogens. Chronic iron deficiency can lead to weaker mucosal barriers, particularly in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts, increasing the risk of infections.”
Formed with Nordic blueberries, BlueIron provides highly bioavailable and fast working iron in combination with other vitamins and minerals such as B12, folate, zinc and biotin. This blend contributes to the healthy maintenance of the body and helps protect the body from the increased risks of infections during the winter.
“Both vitamin B12 and folate are crucial for red blood cell production and DNA synthesis. They work alongside iron to ensure that red blood cells are healthy and able to transport oxygen efficiently. Folate and B12 are also key players involved in methylation, a biochemical process critical for DNA repair and immune cell regulation. Proper methylation ensures that immune cells are produced and function properly.
“Zinc is a trace mineral that plays a key role in the development and function of immune cells such as T cells and macrophages. Zinc supports iron’s role in the immune system by enhancing immune cell function, and it also helps maintain the integrity of mucosal membranes – the body’s first line of defence against pathogens.”
