France has passed a bill to ban the production, import or sale of cosmetic products containing PFAS from June 2026. These toxic chemicals (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are used in numerous consumer products. However, they are highly polluting and take a long time to break down.

As reported in an article published by Cosmetics Design Europe, the new bill bans the use of PFAS in three product categories, including cosmetics, and imposes a fee on industrial water discharges under the “polluter pays” principle.

The text states that French authorities will conduct regular tests on drinking water to monitor the presence of all types of PFAS. It also notes that the European Union has been considering a possible ban on the use of PFAS in consumer products, but no regulation has been implemented yet.

Proven toxicity

Scientific research has linked the presence of PFAS in the drinking water of many French communities to health issues and birth defects. Experts associate chronic exposure, even at very low levels, with several health problems, such as liver damage, reduced immune responses, and cancer.
