How to export organic products worldwide

Exports have become a way to expand the customer base, increase sales, and strengthen the business. It’s essential to consider the cultural differences between the country of origin and the destination country. For an imported product to be sold as an organic product, it must meet standards equivalent to those applied to goods produced in the European Union. Procedures have been established for this purpose if one wishes to market a product as organic. These procedures depend on the origin of the products.

Exporting to Non-EU Countries

Exports of organic products from the European Union to non-EU countries are subject to the specific requirements of the destination country. For more information, it is necessary to contact the competent authorities in the respective country.

The EU has trade agreements for organic products with Chile, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom… The export of organic sector products to Switzerland and the United States requires obtaining a specific export certificate.

For the United States, this is the “NOP Import Certificate.” This certificate must be completed by the accredited European inspection body and certify that the products comply with the terms of the EU/NOP agreement.

Economic cooperation with Switzerland

The strong and extensive economic relations between Switzerland and Spain are based on a long tradition. In 2022, trade reached approximately 20 billion euros. The main categories of traded goods were pharmaceuticals and chemicals, precious metals and jewelry, agricultural products, etc.

For Switzerland, exporters certified under Bio Suisse private specifications must have a Bio Suisse certificate validated with each shipment by the accredited inspection body.

The commercial relationship between France and Spain is very solid (95.1 billion euros in goods trade in 2023 and 16.3 billion euros in services in the same year). To facilitate trade, many public or private organizations can contribute to exports, such as “La Chambre” (Franco-Spanish Chamber of Commerce), which fosters trade relations between France and Spain. It is the Business Club and service provider with the largest Franco-Spanish business community in Spain.

Participating in an organic fair to position in the market

Trade fairs offer multiple opportunities, such as developing a professional network, reaching new clients, and increasing company visibility.

Biofach (Germany) – The world’s leading trade fair for organic foods. The next edition will take place from February 11 to 14, 2025. The Nuremberg Exhibition Center will once again be the meeting place for the international organic food and natural cosmetics industry.

Exhibiting at Natexpo (every fall, alternating between Lyon and Paris) allows all organic suppliers to be at the heart of the reference event. Maximum visibility, international contacts, media exposure, professional encounters, pre-arranged business meetings, sessions on the latest market trends, etc.

Natural Products Expo West (USA): the next expo is scheduled for early March 2025. This is one of the largest global exhibitions for natural and organic products in the United States. Held annually at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, this event showcases the latest in natural products.

Another way to export is through digital tools like RangeMe: the industry-standard platform for discovering, sourcing, and purchasing retail products, trusted by hundreds of retailers worldwide. Based in North America.

New markets and new revenue streams

Expanding abroad is an exciting prospect for many companies that can be costly but rewarding. Support is available across Europe for Spain, according to Royal Decree 38/2017 of January 27. The Directorate General of Food Industry (DGIA) and the Spanish Agricultural Guarantee Fund (FEGA) work together to manage and coordinate basic programs.

How are promotion and information programs managed?

Applications for aid must be submitted to the Executive Agency for Consumers, Health, Agriculture, and Food (EAHC), the authority responsible for publishing the annual call for proposals for single and multi-programs. Numerous export financing plans are available, and if necessary, consultancy companies can provide assistance.
